They offer their own genuine experiences to the film, which greatly contribute to shaping the circumstances we wanted for the Reyes family. We desired the Reyes family to exist in a world that impacts their surroundings and decisions. For instance, in my own Puerto Rican background – displacement, colonialism, urban renewal. These are genuine perils like housing uncertainty, failing to provide food, adequate health care. All these issues are our antagonists.”
