OVERVIEW
Amazon’s Prime Video is set to release the upcoming movie, Sitting in Bars With Cake, a poignant comedy delving into friendship and persistence. The film, featuring Yara Shahidi and Odessa A’Zion, narrates the story of Jane, a baker who discovers her self-worth through the art of cake baking and forming fresh connections.

Director Trish Sie portrays the movie as a surprising twist, transitioning from a romantic comedy to a profound exploration of women’s experiences and friendships.

With Sitting in Bars With Cake, Amazon is whipping up a touching delight, a tale woven with threads of friendship, emotional pain, and determination, brought to life by stars Yara Shahidi and Odessa A’Zion. Adapted from Audrey Shulman’s novel and rooted in real events, director Trish Sie reassures that the comedy goes beyond surface appearances. A trailer is now available, and the Pitch Perfect 3 director has shared her thoughts on the inspiring essence behind the new undertaking.

In the film, Shahidi portrays Jane, a baker in need of self-assurance. Corinne, played by A’zion, comes into the picture to assist her friend by encouraging her to spend a year “cakebarring” – taking cakes to bars to mingle with new people and build her confidence. This story diverges from typical romance, as a life-altering medical revelation alters Jane’s path, steering the film towards a vivid celebration of womanhood and friendship.

Sie’s interest in the film was piqued by this unexpected shift, as she shared with Entertainment Weekly that her initial impression changed about 20 pages in. “I thought I was reading one movie, and then I realized it’s so much more than that,” she said. She elaborated, “I appreciated that surprise element. It’s bold to draw people into what seems like a lighthearted comedy and transform it into something more profound, but then leave them with hope and happiness at the end.” Female friendships are at the heart of Sitting in Bars with Cake, a theme that Sie calls “courageous, relentless, and fearless.” The director emphasized her desire to create a film that transcends romance, focusing on bravery, tenacity, and living life to the fullest.
