In an exclusive interview with FilmSweep’s Steven Weintraub, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shed light on the connection between G.I. Joe and the robots in disguise, hinting at the epic crossover that lies ahead.

Set in a timeline preceding the Michael Bay Transformers films, Rise of the Beasts marks the beginning of a new trilogy that focuses on the Autobots and their newfound allies, the Maximals. As the credits roll, a surprising revelation emerges— the G.I. Joe agency was present and witnessed the battle against Unicron, voiced by Colman Domingo. The real American heroes are thrilled to have discovered allies in their fight for justice and express their desire to join forces with the Autobots. However, it remains unclear whether G.I. Joe had prior knowledge of the Transformers or if they learned about their existence after the events in Peru. According to di Bonaventura:

“Honestly, I don’t know the answer to that. My instinct is that the Transformers came onto their radar for the first time during this battle. They are exceptionally skilled and the only ones who truly comprehend the events that unfolded. So, I don’t believe they had previous knowledge, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t encountered Transformers along the way and been attempting to unravel the mystery. It’s one of the open-ended questions that we still need to address.”

While di Bonaventura’s logic may be debated, the focus should lie in ensuring the success of Rise of the Beasts before making promises of a sequel. Nevertheless, the child within all of us yearns for the spectacle of a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover on the silver screen.

Despite the mixed critical reception of the first five Transformers films, the franchise amassed billions of dollars at the global box office, securing its longevity. However, Paramount decided to chart a new course for the franchise following the underperformance of Transformers: The Last Knight, and the subsequent success and critical acclaim of the 2018 spinoff Bumblebee.

After directing the initial five live-action movies in the Transformers series, Michael Bay stepped aside as director but remained involved as a producer. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is helmed by Steven Caple Jr., with a screenplay adapted by Joby Harold, known for his work on The Flash, in collaboration with Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters.
