Jamie Campbell Bower Awakens an Age-Old Menace in Latest ‘Witchboard’ Trailer

Jamie Campbell Bower, renowned for his role in Stranger Things, sets a chilling séance in motion in the fresh trailer for the anticipated horror flick, Witchboard. This film, an updated version of the beloved ’80s VHS sensation, is set to grace screens in 2024. The trailer gives us a glimpse of Bower’s enigmatic character, occult enthusiast Alexander Babtiste, performing a summoning ritual over an olden pendulum board – the eponymous “witchboard”, with a couple, Madison Iseman and Aaron Dominguez, spectating.

As Babtiste narrates the witchboard’s history, he dangles a pendulum seemingly carved from a skeletal human finger, amidst flashes of ancient, mystic rituals and the mythical witch queen Naga Soth, its creator. The trailer’s intensity escalates in the latter half, with sights of skeletal hands erupting from mattresses, faces ripped apart, and terrifying demons unfurling their wings. The revival of the film was announced earlier this year, with Campbell committed to a lead role.

Who Will Fall Under the ‘Witchboard’s’ Spell?

The plot of Witchboard revolves around Christian and Emily, who relocate to New Orleans with dreams of starting a café in a historic carriage house. Here, they stumble upon the pendulum board, and Emily succumbs to its sinister influence. They turn to Babtiste for assistance, only to realize that he could be as nefarious as the otherworldly entity haunting them. As expected, a chaos of dark magic follows. In addition to Campbell, known for his horrifying portrayal of Vecna in Stranger Things season 4, Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, I Know What You Did Last Summer) will play Emily, while Dominguez (Only Murders in the Building) will take on the role of Christian. The cast also includes Antonia Desplat (Operation Finale, The French Dispatch) and Charlie Tahan (Gotham, Ozark). The film is directed by Chuck Russell, celebrated for his contributions to the horror genre in the ’80s with works like Dreamscape, Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and the remake of The Blob.

Witchboard is an updated version of the 1986 horror film bearing the same name, originally directed by Kevin Tenney (Night of the Demons). The original starred the late Tawny Kitaen, portraying a woman who becomes increasingly possessed by an ancient axe murderer via a cursed Ouija board. The film achieved considerable success as a home video and spurred two sequels: Witchboard 2: The Devil’s Doorway, also directed by Tenney with stars Ami Dolenz and Laraine Newman, and the Canadian production Witchboard III: The Possession. Although these sequels focused on a demonic Ouija board, they weren’t directly related to the original plot. With the modern Ouija horror franchise, the remake had to adapt to a less copyrighted theme.
