Mattel Commemorates Jurassic Park’s 30th Anniversary with a Steven Spielberg Action Figure

Renowned filmmaker Steven Spielberg, recipient of three Academy Awards, an AFI Life Achievement Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is set to receive a unique tribute—an action figure in his likeness. Mattel, the renowned toy manufacturer, will unveil the first-ever Steven Spielberg action figure at this year’s San Diego Comic Con.

According to IGN, Mattel’s offering is part of the Hammond Collection line, designed specifically for collectors, and celebrates the 30th anniversary of Jurassic Park. The meticulously crafted figure captures Spielberg’s appearance circa 1993, complete with his trademark sunglasses, jeans, ballcap, and a dinosaur T-shirt inspired by Andy Warhol’s art. The set also includes a director’s chair, a movie camera, and a posable Dilophosaurus, the venom-spitting dinosaur that notably dispatched Dennis Nedry (Wayne Knight) in the film. Packaging for the set features a unique design that doubles as a functional clapperboard.

PJ Lewis, Mattel’s Vice President and Global Head of Action Figures, expressed excitement about the upcoming release, stating, “To commemorate the 30th anniversary, we wanted to pay homage to the visionary who brought Jurassic Park to the silver screen. Spielberg is a legend, and this action figure is a testament to his significant role in the franchise’s legacy. The team designed the first-ever Steven Spielberg action figure based on a behind-the-scenes photo from the filming of Jurassic Park.” The set will be priced at $30.00 and will be available for purchase at Mattel’s booth during SDCC. Lights, Camera, Action Figures!

Spielberg will now join his longtime friend George Lucas, who has had multiple action figures created in his likeness for the Star Wars franchise. These figures include a representation of Lucas’s blue-skinned cameo in Revenge of the Sith, one as Rebel pilot “Jorg Sacul,” and two “disguised” as Stormtroopers. Unfortunately, other influential directors from the “Movie Brats” era, such as Francis Ford Coppola, Brian DePalma, and Martin Scorsese, have yet to be immortalized as action figures. However, if you’re interested in collecting action figures of contemporary directors, you can find plastic renditions of Jon Favreau portraying MCU character Happy Hogan.

Mattel’s Jurassic Park offerings at SDCC extend beyond the Spielberg figure. They have also enlisted their Hot Wheels brand to create the iconic red-and-gray Jurassic Jeep, complete with a reclining Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) in the backseat, recreating the scene where Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Robert Muldoon (Bob Peck) elude a Tyrannosaurus while transporting the injured Malcolm to safety. This die-cast metal car will come packaged in a special diorama box and will be available for $30.00.
