New McFarlane Figures Bring ‘Dark Knight’ Villains to San Diego Comic Con

Dark Knight Villain Figures

Earlier this year, McFarlane Toys thrilled the DC fanbase by unveiling a series of figures inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. As we inch closer to San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), the company has announced the continuation of this Dark Knight series with the introduction of three new Gold Label SDCC figures, highlighting some of the franchise’s most infamous villains.

First up in this new collection are two seven-inch Gold Label figures depicting the Joker, as portrayed by Heath Ledger. The first figure portrays the Joker in his notorious heist outfit from The Dark Knight’s opening sequence. The second figure captures the villain as seen in Batman’s sonar vision. The use of translucent blue plastic gives this version a unique allure, rekindling memories of the unforgettable final confrontation at the construction site in The Dark Knight. The bank heist Joker figure is also accompanied by an alternate clown mask head sculpt, echoing the classic Adam West Batman series.

The final piece in this SDCC collection is a figure of Bane, played by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises. Bane, the central villain of the film, was previously featured as the build-a-figure in the original wave of Dark Knight figures, which also included characters like Christian Bale’s Batman, Aaron Eckhart’s Two-Face, and Cillian Murphy’s Scarecrow. However, this new Gold Label Bane figure is unique in depicting the imposing character in his iconic winter coat.

Revisiting Iconic Villains from The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight trilogy is cherished for many reasons, but the iconic villains it brought to the screen play a significant part in its enduring cultural relevance. Heath Ledger’s depiction of the Joker is widely recognized as one of the finest performances in film history. His character portrayal, coupled with Christopher Nolan’s gritty approach, and the unforgettable lines, has made Ledger’s Joker the most recognizable depiction of the villain. The fact that his performance posthumously won an Oscar speaks volumes. Even after 15 years, The Dark Knight continues to set a high standard for the comic book genre, and while Hardy’s Bane was a challenging follow-up act to Ledger’s Joker, he successfully made his mark. Despite a peculiar voice that was later humorously referenced in Harley Quinn’s animated series, Hardy’s intimidating physicality and commanding screen presence compensated for any auditory oddities. Both the Joker and Bane are amongst the standout villains of the 21st century, and these latest McFarlane figures pay homage to their iconic roles.

SDCC Dates?

The SDCC will take place at the San Diego Convention Center from Thursday, July 20 to July 23, 2023. The three new Dark Knight villain Gold Label figures will be on display at DC Booth #4645 and will also be available for purchase on the McFarlane’s website in the coming days.
