A spokesperson for the movie clarified a misinterpretation in Nolan’s original statement. Nolan had spoken about the film’s duration being 180 minutes, not its budget being $180 million.
The forthcoming film ‘Oppenheimer’ by Christopher Nolan has already sparked extensive discussion. However, recent developments indicate there is still much more to converse about in the future. Notably, after the main cast exited the premiere event in London due to the onset of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Nolan disclosed to Variety that the film’s budget greatly exceeded the initial figures announced.
While on the red carpet, Nolan equated the length of Oppenheimer to that of Avengers: Endgame. He briefly mentioned the film’s Japanese premiere – a significant event given Japan’s history as the target of the atomic bomb in World War II. He also hinted at uncertainty surrounding the premiere’s confirmation. He finally revealed that the movie’s production costs were far beyond the initially reported $100 million:
“The runtime is two minutes shorter than ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ so we cling to that. I told [producer] Emma Thomas quite early that this will be a three-hour film. We must craft a script that mirrors this. Our dialogue with the studio reflected this. It’s a large-scale narrative requiring immense talent. It’s a 180-page script, and it’s a $180 million movie.”

What Makes a Drama This Costly?
Historical dramas are inherently costly due to the expenses involved in recreating periods, including vehicles and costumes. However, Oppenheimer stands out as Nolan chose an ensemble cast to animate the story, thereby drawing audiences to the theaters. The cast includes major celebrities such as Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Kenneth Branagh, and the lead actor Cillian Murphy. Additionally, the costs associated with other actors, extras, catering services, and an expanded crew have increased the overall project expenses.
Two unique factors further inflated Oppenheimer’s budget: Nolan’s decision to forego any CGI, leading to higher production costs, and his choice to film using IMAX 70mm cameras, posing significant challenges for exhibitors as the premiere date draws near.
Oppenheimer is set to premiere in theaters on July 21. You can view our interview with Nolan below:

Got to respect Nolan for sticking with his vision no matter the cost. It’s gonna be epic, I just know it.
man, 180 million on a historical drama! no wonder Nolan’s movies always look so darn impressive. Love his work!
Downey Jr., Damon, Blunt, Branagh, Murphy in one film… this is gonna be huge! can’t wait for July 21!!
Nolan’s choice to not use any CGI and shoot on IMAX is pretty brave, but that’s probably why the cost is so high. Can’t wait for the movie tho.
3 hours long?? I hope it’s worth the time. Nolan’s movies rarely disappoint though.
