The movie Renfield, starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, opened in theaters this week with a not-so-great result. It was estimated to have made $7.7 million dollars in the US, and an extra $2.3 million from other countries – which all add up to a total of 10 million around the world. This just proves that what people say online doesn’t always translate into money made at the box office!
Renfield is playing in movie theaters all over the world and it’s cost more than $65 million to make. Despite this, not many people are watching it because they don’t really like the Dracula brand. The director, Chris McKay, said that this movie is a follow-up to the famous one with Bela Lugosi from 1931.
In the movie Renfield, the main character decides to pursue a different career after working for a very selfish boss. The audience gave it an average grade of B- and critics on Rotten Tomatoes rated it as “rotten” with an overall score of 59%. Maggie Boccella from FilmSweep says that viewers will have a great time watching this gory film, since the directors found a way to make it both scary and fun.

McKay is famous for his work on Robot Chicken, and then made a big splash by directing the popular Lego Batman Movie. He then made the big-budget movie The Tomorrow War with Chris Pratt. McKay also has contributed to the story of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which was the second most popular movie this weekend at the movies.

Universal had already tried to reboot the Dracula movies once in the past few years. In 2014, they made a film called ‘Dracula Untold’ with Luke Evans as the star but it didn’t do very well. So Universal had planned to create a shared universe called ‘Dark Universe’ featuring classic monster films. But that plan was scrapped after ‘The Mummy’, one of their rebooted classics, failed commercially and creatively in 2017. That’s why Universal went on to make more director-driven movies with tighter budgets such as Leigh Whannell’s ‘The Invisible Man’ which came out in 2020 and did really well – both artistically and financially.
This is the second movie in two years that has tried to make use of Nicholas Cage’s strange acting style. The first one was called The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, but it only made about $30 million across the world. Nicholas used to be one of the biggest movie stars, but after some unfortunate circumstances he had to face, his performance in Pig (released 2021) proved people wrong and it could be a contender for awards this year.
