Sonic the Hedgehog, one of the most cherished brands across all mediums, continues to sprint towards major success, particularly in cinema. As the merchandise for this favorite videogame hedgehog reaches unprecedented heights, LEGO is set to release five new Sonic-themed sets in August.

The Speedy Hedgehog’s Journey from Gaming to Hollywood
Since Sonic’s inaugural video game appearance in 1991 on the Sega Genesis, the character has secured a special place in the hearts of gamers. Parallel to his competitor Super Mario, Sonic has starred in innumerable video games, TV shows, crossover events, and movies. His 2020 self-titled live-action film debut, released just before the pandemic, was a blockbuster. Its 2022 sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, enjoyed even greater acclaim and financial success, grossing over $400 million worldwide. This led to the rapid approval of a third film and a TV spinoff for Sonic’s ally Knuckles. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is set to be released on Christmas 2024, while the Knuckles spinoff will premiere on Paramount+ later this year. Sonic’s Netflix animated series, Sonic Prime, launched its second season earlier this year, and the latest video game adventure, Sonic Frontiers, keeps fans occupied as they anticipate Sonic’s cinematic return.

Although the Sonic frenzy hasn’t matched Mario’s fervor this past spring, the endearing blue blur still holds the title as the second most cherished gaming mascot. Mario and Sonic’s Olympic rivalry is well-known, and toys like the LEGO sets in partnership with Sega offer an excellent way to honor Sonic’s exciting history and universe. As if their gaming and movie face-offs weren’t enough, the LEGO sales might serve as the next big battlefield for Mario and Sonic.
