Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for The Flash.
In the vast multiverse, numerous versions of the same individuals exist. In the realm of movies, this translates into exciting cameo appearances by stars from the past and even the future. Such was the case in the recently released DC film, The Flash.
The Flash, renowned for his ability to traverse the multiverse with incredible speed, takes center stage in the movie. Ezra Miller portrays Barry Allen, the supersonic, physics-defying, and socially awkward hero who journeys back in time to rescue his family. However, his actions unwittingly jeopardize reality itself. Among the film’s many surprises, viewers are treated to a Batman portrayal by Michael Keaton, which deviates from the Bruce Wayne character played by Ben Affleck, whom Barry considers his closest ally.

During the movie’s climactic sequence, The Flash, struggling to rectify the damage caused and accepting that some events are inevitable, opens up a realm of interconnected worlds. Within this expansive landscape, viewers catch glimpses of legendary heroes from the past: Christopher Reeve as Superman, George Reeves as Superman, and Adam West as Batman. Additionally, the film offers tantalizing glimpses of what could have been. One such scene features Nicolas Cage as Superman, engaged in a battle with a giant spider—an homage to an earlier script penned by Kevin Smith in the 1990s, intended for Tim Burton’s direction.

Behind the Scenes
However, it has come to light that even more cameos were initially planned for the film. Andy and Barbara Muschietti, the director and producer of The Flash, respectively, recently spoke with Vanity Fair about the climactic scene that unfolds as Barry races against time to salvage the crumbling reality. They revealed that there were many additional characters that were ultimately left out due to time constraints. Nevertheless, fans may still get a chance to witness these unseen cameos if Andy’s four-hour version of the movie ever emerges.
Barbara explains, “As the universes collided, there were many more characters that we all recognize, but we had to let go of them due to time limitations.” This particular scene, dubbed the Chronobowl, showcases time spiraling backward in a whirlpool-like fashion. Andy further expressed the heart-wrenching decision to omit some beloved characters from DC’s rich history, such as Jor-El, Penguin, and the Joker.
“That ‘hall of fame’ of remarkable characters and actors…there were so many, the list was endless. We had to make choices, we had to select,” Andy said. “Lynda Carter was among them, as well as Marlon Brando, Burgess Meredith, and Cesar Romero. However, we knew we had to include Adam West. Growing up in Argentina, where reruns were vital, we had only four channels, and they frequently aired Batman as if it were a new series. That was our Batman.”
