THE OVERALL SCENE
Even with a 45% decline from the previous week, Barbie is predicted to continue dominating the box office, anticipating a $54 million weekend. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Meg 2: The Trench are vying for the second place, with Meg 2 getting a lukewarm response from critics, and the impact of the Chinese market being considered. Oppenheimer, having crossed the $200 million mark, is expected to bring in $28 million this weekend, thus becoming one of the highest earning films never to have secured the number one spot at the box office.

A slew of fresh and familiar offerings is sparking an exceptionally robust first weekend of August. As Barbie looks set to retain its box office crown for the third consecutive week, two new entrants – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Meg 2: The Trench – are set to challenge Oppenheimer in a tightly fought battle for the runner-up position.

On its third Friday, Barbie brought in an additional $17 million, having surpassed the $400 million mark just a day before. The film, standing on the brink of breaking the half-a-billion domestically, is forecasted to earn $54 million this weekend, representing only a minor 45% dip from its previous week. The satirical comedy, under the direction of Greta Gerwig, had earned $93 million in its second weekend, following a record-shattering $162 million debut. On the global stage, Barbie is anticipated to reach (if not surpass) the $1 billion milestone by tomorrow, thereby becoming the second film of the year to achieve this esteemed landmark after The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Securing the second spot is Meg 2, featuring Jason Statham and directed by renowned British director Ben Wheatley. The movie earned $12 million on Friday, which includes the $3.2 million from Thursday previews. Meg 2, the sequel to 2018’s The Meg, had a domestic opening of $45 million and concluded its run with $145 million. However, its outstanding performance in China catapulted its global earnings past the half-billion mark. Reviews for Meg 2 have been far from flattering, but it’s uncertain what will have a more substantial impact on the film: competition, unenthusiastic reviews, or the diminishing significance of China for Hollywood releases.

It’s Shaping Up to Be a Close Contest for Second Place

Debuting mid-week and raking in $9.3 million on Friday, Mutant Mayhem is in the third spot. The movie has amassed $24 million so far and is aiming for a $45 million total for its extended five-day debut. Paramount’s animated franchise-starter aspires to replicate the success of Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which also had a comparably modest budget and managed to rake in substantial box office earnings. Paramount hopes that the excellent reviews for Mutant Mayhem will help regain some of the luster lost due to the lackluster commercial performance of Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.

Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller, Oppenheimer, which recounts the life of the atomic bomb’s father, will have to be content with the fourth position, at least for Friday. On its third Friday, Oppenheimer added just below $8 million and crossed the $200 million mark at a record pace for an R-rated film distributed by Universal. The film is projected to earn $28 million this weekend, enough to help it reclaim the second spot for the third consecutive weekend. With its current trajectory, Oppenheimer is set to be one of the highest earning films that have never secured the number one spot at the box office.

Rounding off the top five is Disney’s Haunted Mansion, earning $2.8 million on its second Friday and a projected weekend total of just under $10 million. It’s a disappointing outcome for a movie that reportedly cost $150 million to produce and only managed to gross $24 million in its first weekend. The movie is projected to reach a modest $42 million domestic total by Sunday. An interview with Haunted Mansion’s director, Justin Simien, can be found here. Honestly, I’m not surprised Oppenheimer is doing well. With Christopher Nolan directing, it was bound to be a hit. It’s a shame it hasn’t topped the box office though.

Despite the negative reviews, I’m still gonna see Meg 2. Loved the first one and I’m sure the sequel will be just as good… or at least I hope so.
