Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary Experience

San Diego Comic-Con is the site of a novel interactive venture, brought to life to commemorate the three-decade anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s timeless masterpiece. The event featured life-size prop replicas of famous scenes from the film, exclusive merchandise for sale, and even the occasional dinosaur, much to the delight of fans. FilmSweep’s Perri Nemiroff got a chance to visit the venue, which was transformed into a scenic replica of the movie’s disaster-prone theme park. For a while, San Diego morphed into a bustling Isla Nublar.

The exhibit showcased the two jeeps in which characters Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) embarked on their thrilling island expedition. Fans could pose next to the green visitor tour vehicle and the ranger’s vehicle, giving them the opportunity to step into the shoes of the Jurassic Park team. Over the past thirty years, the movie has left an indelible mark on pop culture, and few places have been able to replicate the Isla Nublar experience as authentically as what Universal Studios brought to the San Diego Comic-Con.

Fans could witness the Velociraptor attack scene in the kitchen, where Tim (Joseph Mazzello) and Lex (Ariana Richards) faced off against history’s deadliest predators. Another photo-worthy set re-enacted the chilling scene where Donald Gennaro (Martin Ferrero) meets his end in the jaws of a T-Rex while hiding in a restroom. Various dinosaurs could be seen scattered around the exhibition, injecting a dose of thrill into the immersive experience, which was aimed at helping audiences forge fresh connections with a film that’s been a part of their lives for decades.

From clothing and toys to collectibles and personalized license plates, everything was up for grabs, enriching the overall prehistoric ambiance of this pop culture event. After all, San Diego is no newcomer to dinosaur encounters, having served as the backdrop for the climactic third act of the 1997 sequel, The Lost World. Once again, a T-Rex was sighted wandering the streets, making the interactive experience as unforgettable as the films themselves.

as a paleontologist, I’m always a bit critical about dino portrayals in media. but you know what, this sounds fun. Might have to check out comic-con sometime.
