THE OVERVIEW
Despite its acclaim, a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons remains unconfirmed, perhaps due to its moderate global box office earnings.
The plethora of source material offers writers a chance to craft a unique sequel that maintains the original characters, akin to a role-playing game.
Chris Pine expresses keen interest in reprising his role in a potential sequel.

The anticipation for the Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves film was high, given the vast universe it could draw from. Directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley delivered a balanced mix of excitement and action. Yet, there’s no news on a sequel. Chris Pine (of Star Trek fame) believes a sequel, Dungeons & Dragons 2, might be in the works.

During a Total Film interview on the press tour for Disney’s animated film Wish, Pine shared insights about the D&D series’ future, hinting at a possible sequel. It’s been nearly eight months since the premiere of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – isn’t it time for Paramount and Hasbro to discuss what’s next? Pine shares his thoughts:

“I’ve caught wind of some murmurs about it. I’m not in the loop, but I’m quite optimistic about its possibility.”

Pine also confirmed his eagerness to join Dungeons & Dragons 2, much to the delight of fans. A challenge for the film team is aligning the schedules of the star-studded cast: Michelle Rodriguez (Fast X), Justice Smith (Pokémon Detective Pikachu), Rége-Jean Page (Bridgerton), and Sophia Lillis (Asteroid City).

Why The Delay In Announcing A ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Sequel?

The reality is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, while popular, didn’t massively impress the studios with a $208 million USD global box office haul. It’s a decent figure for a nascent franchise but not a blockbuster, leading to studio hesitations about audience turnout for a sequel.

Fortunately, the rich D&D lore allows for a diverse sequel that retains the main characters, mimicking an RPG’s dynamic nature. Meanwhile, fans can immerse themselves in the D&D universe through its exclusive Freevee channel, featuring standalone campaigns and a cooking show based on the D&D cookbook.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is available for streaming on Paramount+ and MGM+.

Not surprised the box office was just ok, D&D is kinda niche, but a sequel could totally work if they amp up the action and maybe throw in more dragons? just saying…

Waited so long for D&D movie and it was pretty good! Hope they make a sequel, there’s so much more they can explore with the story, and the cast is awesome.
