FILMSWEEP VIDEO OF THE DAY
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny delves into the profound significance of time. The film explores the notion of age catching up with us, the realization that some mistakes from the past cannot be undone, and the graceful acceptance of this reality. Harrison Ford eloquently expresses these themes in anticipation of the movie’s release. Director James Mangold discusses the importance of time in a recent interview with Inverse, reflecting on the impact of these themes now that the film has been unveiled.
As with all of Indiana Jones’ adventures, a mystical artifact propels the plot forward. This time, it is the Dial of Archimedes, also known as the Antikythera mechanism. Jurgen Voller, portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen, a Nazi scientist, believes this dial, designed by the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes, holds the secret to time travel. Voller harbors nefarious intentions for its use.
“The central theme of the movie was time. My version of Indy is a 70-year-old Indy, and I wanted to explore time not only in terms of travel but also in the sense that I cannot undo the mistakes of my past,” Mangold explains. “I cannot be the person I once was because the world has changed around me. Time, with all its facets, catches up with us as we grow older.”

How Can We Save… Hitler?
Voller’s plan involves returning to Germany just before the outbreak of World War II. His intention is to assassinate Hitler, potentially altering the outcome of the war. To execute this plan, Indy must venture back to Nazi Germany during the war, battling the Nazis and attempting to save Hitler. However, Mangold felt that something was missing, an essential emotional element. It turns out that the Dial can only transport individuals to the time it was created—an aspect Voller did not anticipate.
“I carefully considered various options before making this choice. I also pondered whether Mads’ theory, even if we could travel through time, would lead them to Nazi Germany. Would the climax of the movie revolve around Indy thwarting Voller’s scheme? But the more I envisioned it, the more it felt like a mere spy movie at the end. I struggled to find the emotional resonance,” Mangold reveals.
Mangold’s solution to imbue the film with emotional depth was to transport Indy to a place he had always dreamed of witnessing. In the poignant climax, Indy decides to remain, despite his severe injuries, and becomes an eyewitness to the Battle of Syracuse alongside Archimedes himself. Of course, he is not permitted to do so, but we all believe he will. This sequence captures the true emotional essence of the story.
“It struck me that throughout the film, we have been discussing three distinct time periods: 1968, 1944, and 200 BC. So why not explore the latter? It was the one time period that had been extensively discussed but never visualized. The idea resonated with me immediately. Indy’s character would suddenly face something he had only imagined throughout his life—the reality of a time he had only glimpsed through the keyhole of history and artifacts. It would be an incredibly powerful moment for Harrison to portray,” Mangold explains.
