Jensen Ackles Expresses Interest in Playing Batman in the DCU
When DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled plans for a fresh portrayal of Batman in The Brave and the Bold, fans immediately began speculating about the actor who would step into the iconic role. Jensen Ackles, widely recognized for his portrayal of Dean Winchester in The CW’s Supernatural, emerged as a fan favorite. Ackles recently addressed the possibility of embodying Batman while attending the Jus In Bello Convention in Italy (via Deadline).
During the convention, Ackles admitted his interest in playing the character, stating, “Could I do it? Sure. Would I want to do it? Yes.” However, he clarified that he had not engaged in any discussions with individuals at DC Studios regarding the role of Batman in Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe. Playfully, Ackles quipped, “Would I entertain the idea of playing my favorite superhero of all time? Nah, I’m good. It seems like a lot of work, you know. You gotta put on a bat suit and be a superhero. I would love it. Sign me up.”
While fans eagerly await confirmation of Ackles’ live-action portrayal, he has already lent his voice to the character in animated films within the DC Universe Animated Original Movies lineup. Ackles first voiced Batman in the two-part film Batman: The Long Halloween in 2021. He subsequently reprised the role in Legion of Super-Heroes, released in February. Additionally, Ackles will portray the character in the upcoming film Justice League: Warworld, set to premiere this summer. All of these films, featuring Ackles’ rendition of Batman, are part of the Tomorrowverse—a shared DC Universe initiated with Superman: Man of Tomorrow in 2020. Prior to his involvement with Batman, Ackles voiced Jason Todd/Red Hood in the 2010 animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood.

Gunn and Safran’s DC Universe to Embrace Live Action and Animation
Distinguishing itself from the DC Extended Universe, the upcoming DCU will incorporate both live-action and animated productions. One of the initial projects within the DCU is the animated series Creature Commandos. “In animation, we’re actually trying to cast the voices of the actors we want to play them in real life,” shared Safran while unveiling the first DCU films and television series in January. Viola Davis is one such actor who will appear in both mediums, reprising her role as Amanda Waller from the DCEU. Davis will also portray the character in the forthcoming live-action series Waller.
