New Featurette Unveils the Spectacular Scale of ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One’

Director Christopher McQuarrie and superstar Tom Cruise have continually pushed the boundaries of action-packed set pieces in the iconic Mission: Impossible series. From death-defying stunts on airborne planes to gripping helicopter maneuvers, they have consistently raised the bar. In their latest installment, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, they have a heart-stopping scene in store where Cruise drives a motorbike off a cliff. While this highly anticipated sequence has been teased extensively, the duo has also filmed another jaw-dropping action scene on “the biggest set” they have ever worked on.

Today’s featured video, courtesy of the Abu Dhabi Film Commission, offers an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the two large-scale action scenes shot on location in the United Arab Emirates. The first scene appears to be a classic Mission: Impossible moment, featuring Cruise’s character Ethan Hunt skillfully evading authorities in a bustling public setting. However, the second scene breaks new ground for the franchise, as it showcases a horse chase in the mesmerizing desert terrain. Inspired by their positive experience collaborating with local crews and authorities in Abu Dhabi, McQuarrie explains in the video that they took advantage of the stunning sand dunes and a nearby “big salt flat” to create this thrilling sequence.

Before diving into the desert adventure, McQuarrie provides insights into the construction of a scene set within the state-of-the-art Abu Dhabi airport, both inside the terminal and on its striking rooftop. The video captures Cruise’s character navigating discreetly through the terminal, accompanied by the equally cautious presence of Hayley Atwell’s character. However, when their cover is compromised, Ethan makes a daring escape onto the airport’s roof, which McQuarrie describes as resembling “giant steel sand dunes.” It is on this vast, breathtaking rooftop where Cruise’s iconic sprint, known to captivate audiences worldwide, will unfold, delivering pure entertainment and astonishment.

Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise Fulfill a Desert Sequence Dream

“Our goal was to create a grander, more global film. The Etihad and Abu Dhabi Airport provided us with this incredible space, granting us an opportunity to shoot a sequence like never before. The location was extraordinary and beautiful, truly epic in scale. Once we decided to film the airport sequence in Abu Dhabi, it became clear that we should also capture a desert sequence. Tom and I have always envisioned an adventure like this in the desert. The location itself guided us. While these scenes may appear effortless, they are actually meticulously crafted and demand Tom’s exceptional skills. It truly became the most immense set we have ever tackled.”

Dead Reckoning Part One marks the third collaboration between McQuarrie and Cruise in the Mission: Impossible series, following the successes of Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible — Fallout. Fans can eagerly anticipate their reunion in next year’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part Two. Joining Cruise in the ensemble cast for both films are Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Pom Klementieff, and Esai Morales. Dead Reckoning Part One is set to release on July 12, with Dead Reckoning Part Two following on June 28, 2024.
