THE OVERVIEW
The forthcoming animation, The Inventor, explores the personal challenges faced by the iconic inventor, Leonardo Da Vinci. Jim Capobianco, one of the minds behind Ratatouille, is stepping into the director’s shoes with The Inventor, intrigued by Da Vinci’s private life and his influence on others through his works. The film boasts an ensemble cast, including Stephen Fry, Daisy Ridley, and Marion Cotillard.

Hailing from the creative genius behind Ratatouille, an Oscar-winning animation, comes The Inventor, an anticipated animation set against the backdrop of the Renaissance period in Paris. However, the protagonist of this new film from Jim Capobianco isn’t an aspiring rat, but instead a real-life trailblazer, the illustrious inventor Leonardo Da Vinci (voiced by Stephen Fry). Rendered in magnificent stop-motion animation, The Inventor penetrates into the core of Da Vinci, presenting not just his brilliant inventions but also the personal tribulations that haunted him privately.

As the trailer emphasizes, The Inventor plans to concentrate on Da Vinci’s later years. This aspect is distinctly shown in the film as the celebrated artist and inventor is portrayed with a long beard and a bald head. The trailer commences with a narrative voice-over of Da Vinci appropriately declaring himself as “a fairly perceptive inventor.” The narration then discloses that the central narrative will unravel the journey of how the esteemed Leonardo Da Vinci came into prominence. The trailer unveils several scenes depicting Da Vinci immersed in crafting numerous ingenious inventions. While some are captivated by his genius, his audacity seems to agitate rather than awe certain authoritative figures. Viewing Da Vinci’s works as a menace to Italian conventional values, they aim to limit his daring creations. This unwelcome opposition compels Da Vinci to embark on a journey to France, where he can unrestrictedly explore his genius.

The Inventor Marks Jim Capobianco’s Directorial Debut

Jim Capobianco is widely recognized for co-creating the original story for the 2007 popular animated movie Ratatouille, in partnership with Brad Bird and Jan Pinkava. The Inventor will be his initial endeavor as a director. Always intrigued by Da Vinci’s personal life, Capobianco had aspired to create a film about this aspect of the inventor’s existence. “I’m narrating the tale of [da Vinci] towards the end of his life and his time in France,” Capobianco revealed in an interview with Variety. He continued;

“Upon researching him, I found out that he felt he procrastinated a lot and didn’t complete many of the projects he began. So, I contemplated what that would mean to this individual, this character. I understood it’s about what legacy you leave behind and how your actions influence others, how you change other people’s lives during your time here.”
