Shifting to drama, Arkin delivered another critically acclaimed performance in Robert Ellis Miller’s 1968 film, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, earning him another Oscar nomination and his first Golden Globe nomination. In the 1980s, he worked with Carol Burnett in Improper Channels and Chu Chu and the Philly Flash, while also making his mark on television in sitcom Harry and the TV film, The Fourth Wise Man. His performance in the 1987 TV film, Escape from Sobibor, brought him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
In the ’90s, Arkin worked with Tim Burton in the cult classic Edward Scissorhands and appeared in other notable films such as So I Married an Axe Murderer, The Rocketeer, and Glengarry Glen Ross. His momentum continued into the 2000s with roles in America’s Sweethearts alongside John Cusack, Billy Crystal, and Julia Roberts. Other significant projects included Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, The Pentagon Papers, and And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself. Arkin’s portrayal of a blunt yet supportive grandfather in the 2006 indie comedy-drama, Little Miss Sunshine, won him a BAFTA and an Academy Award.
Post his well-deserved Oscar win, Arkin maintained his pace in Hollywood, earning nominations for his role in Ben Affleck’s drama Argo at the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. In the 2010s, Arkin worked in films such as Stand Up Guys, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and Grudge Match, among others.
Most recently, Arkin lent his voice to the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman and starred in the platform’s sitcom, The Kominsky Method.
