In the ’90s, Arkin worked with Tim Burton in the cult classic Edward Scissorhands and appeared in other notable films such as So I Married an Axe Murderer, The Rocketeer, and Glengarry Glen Ross. His momentum continued into the 2000s with roles in America’s Sweethearts alongside John Cusack, Billy Crystal, and Julia Roberts. Other significant projects included Thirteen Conversations About One Thing, The Pentagon Papers, and And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself. Arkin’s portrayal of a blunt yet supportive grandfather in the 2006 indie comedy-drama, Little Miss Sunshine, won him a BAFTA and an Academy Award.
