When fans think of the beloved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, one character that immediately comes to mind is Shredder – the Turtles’ formidable nemesis armed with blades, who has haunted the dreams of countless children. However, it might come as a surprise to fans that Shredder will not be making an appearance in the upcoming film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem. But fear not, as Jeff Rowe, the co-director of the film, assures fans that Shredder will be featured in future movies if a sequel gets the green light.

During an interview with SFX magazine, Rowe expressed his unwavering commitment to expanding the franchise, hinting at Shredder’s presence in upcoming films. He even joked that they would follow a similar approach as Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, where the iconic Joker made his debut in the second film. Rowe believes that allowing the Turtles to grow and face their greatest threat later on would make Shredder even more menacing and captivating. He explained, “When you’ve matured and become confident as a teenager, going up against a foe that is three times scarier than anything you’ve encountered before is both intriguing and dramatic.”

Rowe’s adaptation of Mutant Mayhem differentiates itself from previous iterations by emphasizing the protagonists’ room for growth. The film takes a conscious effort to portray the teenage Turtles as genuine teenagers, and to achieve this authenticity, actual teenagers were cast in the roles. Rowe elaborated on their approach, stating that they aimed for teenagers watching the movie to feel seen and understood. This became the foundation for the entire project, including the decision to depict the Turtles as lanky and awkward rather than imposing and muscular. It was a groundbreaking choice that had never been done before. The four titular Turtles in the upcoming film are played by Nicolas Cantu, Micah Abbey, Brady Noon, and Shamon Brown Jr.

Rowe’s mention of the previous “hulking, ripped” depictions of the Turtles alludes to the 2016 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, directed by Dave Green. That film, along with its 2014 predecessor, portrayed the Turtles as uncanny and slightly grotesque beings, resembling aliens more than Earthbound teenagers. The upcoming film aims to rectify this by featuring a younger and more playful visual style, complemented by the teenage casting choices. The cast of Mutant Mayhem includes Nicolas Cantu, Micah Abbey, Brady Noon, Shamon Brown Jr., Seth Rogen (who wrote the screenplay), Ayo Edebiri, John Cena, Natasia Demetriou, Maya Rudolph, Ice Cube, Post Malone, and Hannibal Buress.
