‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ Producer Explains What That Spacecraft Is in the Lair

The long-awaited return of the Transformers franchise to the silver screen has brought about a wave of excitement with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. This soft reboot film, helmed by director Steven Caple Jr., not only introduces the Maximals but also showcases the immense threat of Unicron and his commanding Terrorcons. Alongside these new elements, human heroes Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) and Elena Wallace (Dominique Fishback) take center stage as they join the race to find a sought-after artifact targeted by the enemy bots. While the film captivated viewers, one particular detail left them intrigued—a distinctive spacecraft glimpsed inside a lair, appearing as if it belonged in another Hasbro intellectual property.

In a recent interview with Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a seasoned producer, Steve Weintraub from FilmSweep inquired about the nature of the vehicle concealed behind those doors and how it fits into the evolving Transformers universe. Weintraub suggested that the craft resembled something from the G.I. Joe realm, which di Bonaventura previously hinted at for an upcoming film. However, di Bonaventura clarified that the spacecraft serves a purpose unique to Transformers and is deliberately designed to be of alien origin. “No, that’s actually… It’s purposefully one of the ships that has—nobody would know this, but it is of an alien origin,” he disclosed.

The ship’s connection traces back to the film’s opening, where the Maximals and Terrorcons are introduced, explaining their arrival on Earth. “I’m forgetting right now, but it’s the craft in which they landed when you saw the opening with the Maximals. That kind of thing,” di Bonaventura elaborated. Notably, Bumblebee and the other Autobots crash-landed on the planet in escape pods from Cybertron in Bumblebee, the beloved yellow bot’s standalone film in 2018. However, the construction of the spacecraft appears distinct from what audiences witnessed back then.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts continues the franchise’s shift away from the Michael Bay films, building upon the character-driven approach of Bumblebee. As previously revealed by Bonaventura, the movie portrays the Autobots at their lowest point, venturing to Earth after their failed attempt to reclaim Cybertron from the Decepticons. Optimus Prime, once again voiced by the iconic Peter Cullen, undergoes a significant character arc, learning what it truly means to be a leader, aided by Ron Perlman’s Optimus Primal. As the war with Unicron rages on and the Transformers become increasingly prominent on Earth, organizations like Sector Seven are poised to become more involved in investigating and covering up the existence of these mechanical beings.

The creative team behind this globetrotting adventure consists of writers Joby Harold, known for his work on The Flash, alongside Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters. Joining the two human leads and robots, Rise of the Beasts features a star-studded cast, including Tobe Nwigwe and Luna Lauren Vélez as non-Transformer characters. Pete Davidson lends his voice to Noah’s companion Autobot Mirage, while Michelle Yeoh takes on the role of Airazor. Liza Koshy portrays Arcee, Cristo Fernández embodies Wheeljack, Peter Dinklage voices Scourge, John DiMaggio brings Stratosphere to life, and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez and Colman Domingo voice Nightbird and Unicron, respectively.
