An Extra Hour of Footage in ‘Rebel Moon’ Director’s Cut, Announces Zack Snyder

The acclaimed filmmaker Zack Snyder, who has a penchant for creating director’s cuts, is back at it again with Rebel Moon. An additional hour of content will be released in an extended version of the film, making the director’s cut a richer and more nuanced experience, complete with specially crafted extra scenes.

The first part of the epic, Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire, showcases an all-star cast. It narrates the gripping tale of a battle for an entire galaxy’s destiny on Veldt, one of the moon’s in the universe.

Zack Snyder’s signature move is his director’s cut, and his two-part sci-fi adventure Rebel Moon will carry on the tradition. Before the much-awaited Netflix premiere of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire in December, Snyder spilled the beans that nearly an hour would be added to the total film’s runtime when the two director’s cuts eventually see the light of day.

In a conversation with Netflix’s Tudum website, Snyder explained, “The director’s cut adds almost an hour of additional content, turning it into an authentic extended universe version. You’ll see much more. It’s fully fleshed out. A deeper exploration, something I’ve become quite famous for. I’m not sure how I became synonymous with director’s cuts, but I’ve always had to battle for them. Previously, nobody seemed to want them.” Snyder’s plans don’t just stop at releasing director’s cuts for both segments; he intentionally filmed scenes for the extended version:

“With Netflix, we designed scenes exclusively for the director’s cut. This creates a whole new layer for the fans. It’s like rediscovering the film in a way they wouldn’t otherwise experience. I’m buzzing with excitement!”

Initially conceived as a Star Wars movie, Rebel Moon features Sofia Boutella playing Kora, an enigmatic figure on Veldt’s moon. Facing threats from the oppressive Mother World and the mighty Imperium army, “Kora brings together a small team of fighters… unified by a desire for redemption and vengeance,” as Netflix’s synopsis reveals. “With the looming shadow of an entire Realm, a battle over the destiny of the galaxy unfolds.”

The talented cast includes Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Ed Skrein, Jena Malone, Michiel Huisman, Cleopatra Coleman, and Anthony Hopkins. Directed by Snyder and penned by him alongside Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten, Rebel Moon was produced by Snyder, his wife Deborah Snyder, and Wesley Coller under their Stone Quarry banner, with Eric Newman for Grand Electric.

Snyder’s Fame for Director’s Cuts

Snyder’s reputation for creating extended cuts precedes him. Forced to step back from DC’s Justice League, he later unveiled a revised version called Zack Snyder’s Justice League, more aligned with his original concept. While the original film faced criticism, many considered Snyder’s cut a more profound and improved edition.

Snyder also hinted at a future director’s cut for his 2011 movie Sucker Punch, which initially did not fare well but has since gained a cult following. Fans have been clamoring for more, and with Snyder’s knack for director’s cuts, extended editions of Rebel Moon seem like a natural progression.
