This pivotal moment purportedly mirrors the real-life Oppenheimer’s chilling statement, “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds,” as Flora Nolan’s unidentified character is obliterated in the blinding light of a nuclear blast.
Nolan detailed how he roped his daughter into the cameo role. Explaining to The Telegraph, he said he “required someone for that minor part of an essentially improvisational and spontaneous sequence” which had remained uncast. When she had a break from college, Nolan casually asked his daughter if she’d like to join the scene, stating, “It was a delightful experience to simply have her go along with it.” Recognizing that the notion of graphically having one’s child meet their end during a film cameo might appear odd, Nolan underscored his intention to demonstrate the devastating real-world consequences of the atomic bomb:
“Sure, I understand, it might seem strange. Honestly, I avoid scrutinizing my own motives. But the underlying message is that if you unleash the ultimate destructive force, it will also annihilate those you hold close. So this was, in my view, the most potent way to express that.”
