‘Extraction 2’ Includes a Clever Appearance by Director Sam Hargrave
In Extraction 2, it’s not just Chris Hemsworth who gets to have some on-screen fun. Director Sam Hargrave, although not portraying the action hero Tyler Rake and enduring a spectacular 21-minute continuous shot while set ablaze, managed to make a sly appearance in the film, much like he did in the original Extraction. Steve Weintraub from FilmSweep had the keen eye to spot the disguised stunt coordinator-turned-director in a scene and took the opportunity to inquire about Hargrave’s role as a gravedigger.
Apart from his stunt work, Hargrave has a background in acting. While he may not be a megastar like Hemsworth, he has secured minor roles in movies such as Atomic Blonde, Birds of Prey, and MacGyver, among others. He has even made multiple appearances in projects by Extraction 2 producers Anthony and Joe Russo, like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. However, finding a suitable spot for himself in his own film proved to be a challenge. Despite being too occupied to take on a more substantial part like the marksman Gaetan in the original film, Hargrave managed to find a scene that allowed him to seamlessly slide in while directing:

“Nice catch! Essentially, I was so busy with everything else that I ran out of time. There were instances where I thought, ‘Oh, I could do that,’ but then I realized, ‘Nope, too busy. I could handle that… No, it’s too much.’ This additional scene we wrote was actually meant for a character other than myself, but I came up with the idea of having a gravedigger. I thought, ‘What if we show them walking and stumble upon this freshly dug ditch, and then the guy gets taken out and falls into it?’ It had that gangster, mafia-like feel.”

Hargrave Made an Effort to Blend In with a Disguise
Although Hargrave joined the Extraction 2 cast, which featured Hemsworth alongside Golshifteh Farahani, Adam Bessa, Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Bernhardt, and Tinatin Dalakishvili, he wasn’t particularly eager to be recognized. While all eyes were on the thrilling action and Hemsworth’s portrayal of a hero as he embarks on a mission to save a woman and her children from a Georgian prison, at the request of a mysterious client, Hargrave did his best to remain incognito with the aid of a wig and some hair dye. Unfortunately, Weintraub wasn’t fooled, but the director was simply delighted to have a fun cameo that didn’t add extra weight to his already busy schedule:
“So I thought, ‘Well, that’s a pretty straightforward part. Hard to mess up. I’ll just jump in the ditch and dig it.’ I did make an effort – you caught me there – Chris’s team put a wig on me and added some gray to my beard, but you still managed to spot me. I didn’t do a great job of concealing my identity.”
