Emma Stone Stars in Chilling Image from ‘Poor Things’

Following the success of the period black comedy “The Favourite” in 2018, which brought together the talents of Olivia Colman and Emma Stone under the direction of Yorgos Lanthimos, Emma Stone reunites with the acclaimed filmmaker for his latest venture, the twisted Frankenstein tale titled “Poor Things.” While Lanthimos is renowned for his dense and unsettling psychological dramas, his new film takes a bold leap into the realm of sci-fi-tinged horror. An intriguing image recently released from the movie features Stone in the lead role of Bella Baxter, a woman brought back to life by a deranged scientist, though her brain has been replaced with that of an infant.

Lanthimos has heaped praise upon Stone’s performance in the film, describing it as “unlike anything you’ve seen before.” He also revealed that during the process, Stone often questioned her own work, unsure of its quality, but Lanthimos himself was amazed by her talent. In fact, he was so impressed that he cast Stone in his upcoming project after “Poor Things,” an anthology film titled “AND.” Joining Stone in the cast of “Poor Things” is the esteemed Willem Dafoe, who portrays Dr. Godwin Baxter, the twisted mastermind behind Bella’s resurrection. Margaret Qualley also stars in the film, and all three actors are set to appear in “AND” as well. The ensemble cast of “Poor Things” is further enriched by the inclusion of Mark Ruffalo, Christopher Abbott, Ramy Youssef, Jarod Carmichael, and Kathryn Hunter.

Principal photography for “Poor Things” took place in Hungary in the latter half of 2021. The screenplay, adapted from Alasdair Gray’s novel of the same name, was written by Tony McNamara, who previously collaborated with Lanthimos on “The Favourite.” Robbie Ryan is credited as the film’s cinematographer, while Yorgos Mavropsaridis serves as the editor. The production team behind “Poor Things” includes Ed Guiney, Ali Herting, Andrew Lowe, Dave McCary, alongside Lanthimos and Stone.

When Will “Poor Things” Be Released?

“Poor Things” is set to premiere in theaters on September 8 of this year, courtesy of Searchlight Pictures. It will be competing against “The Nun 2” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3,” both of which are also scheduled for release on the same weekend. Check out the film’s trailer below:
