First Trailer of Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Promises a Blood-Soaked Adventure

Sony Pictures just unveiled the inaugural glimpse at its forthcoming Spider-Man spin-off, Kraven the Hunter, the newest addition to what was previously named the Spider-Man Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC in its unfortunate abbreviation). Stepping into the titular role is Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who portrays a Russian nobleman-turned-hunter in the US. His obsession for hunting large game leads him to set his sights on Spider-Man as his ultimate quarry.

The trailer offers a healthy dose of action, familiar to fans of Sony’s Marvel-based movies like Venom and Morbius. However, Kraven the Hunter hints at a harsher, grittier edge than its predecessors, as evident in the tone of the scenes presented in this first glance at the film. Taylor-Johnson is shown tackling large creatures on the savannah, with one lion seemingly in for a tough time. A high point is the revelation of the villain, Rhino, who was previously portrayed in a humorous light by Paul Giamatti in Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man series. This iteration of Rhino appears to be a more authentic portrayal of the marauding adversary.

J.C. Chandor, known for directing Netflix’s Triple Frontier, the survival movie All is Lost, and crime drama A Most Violent Year, is at the helm of the film. The movie’s lineup also includes Ariana DeBose from West Side Story as Voodoo Priestess Calypso, Fred Hechinger as Kraven’s half-brother Dmitri Smerdyakov (also known as Chameleon), and Christopher Abbott, rumoured to be The Foreigner, the film’s main villain. Alessandro Nivola, Levi Miller, and Russell Crowe will also star in the film.

What’s the Premise of Kraven the Hunter?

The movie will explore the life and exploits of Sergei Kravinoff, better known as Kraven. Although the precise plot details remain concealed, the movie is set to capture Kraven’s metamorphic journey towards becoming the world’s supreme hunter, a storyline deeply rooted in the character’s depiction in Marvel comics.

Kraven typically focuses his efforts on hunting Spider-Man. However, the elusive presence of Spider-Man within his own extended universe makes it improbable for the beloved web-slinger to feature in this film. Furthermore, Kraven the Hunter has been announced at CinemaCon to possess an R rating, indicating a shift towards a darker and more obsessive narrative that echoes the character’s representation in the comics.

Kraven the Hunter is scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 6. The trailer for the movie is available for viewing below.
