Jason Blum Addresses a Significant Issue in Filmmaking and His Efforts to Remedy It

The long-awaited comeback of the Lambert family is just around the corner. After a decade since their heroic endeavors in rescuing Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) from possession in Insidious: Chapter 2, they are prepared to bid farewell to their haunting experiences with the release of Insidious: The Red Door. With Scott Teems penning the screenplay based on a story by Leigh Whannell, this latest installment offers the esteemed horror veteran, Patrick Wilson, an opportunity to step into the director’s chair. Prior to its release, James Wan, the previous director and producer, along with Jason Blum, the head of Blumhouse, engaged in an interview with Perri Nemiroff from FilmSweep, discussing the experience of entrusting Wilson with the directorial duties and ensuring a smooth transition.

Patrick Wilson has undeniably made his mark on modern horror. Apart from the Insidious franchise, he is also widely recognized as one of the pillars of James Wan’s The Conjuring universe, portraying the role of paranormal expert Ed Warren alongside Vera Farmiga’s Lorraine Warren. Despite his extensive experience in both major and independent horror films, stepping into the realm of directing presented Wilson with an entirely new challenge, further compounded by his simultaneous return as Josh Lambert. Nevertheless, the presence of Blum and Wan alleviated some of the burden. When asked about the seemingly minor yet crucial factor that assisted Wilson in his directorial debut, Blum emphasized his desire to rectify a prevalent issue within the industry by allowing Wilson ample time to bring the film to fruition:

“We provided a more generous schedule. James will tell you, the system is deeply flawed because the more experienced and successful a director becomes, the longer schedule they require. Paradoxically, first-time directors need the longest schedule since they are still discovering what aspects will make it into the final movie. They need time to experiment. Experienced directors, on the other hand, possess that knowledge. Therefore, one of the small steps we took was granting Patrick a longer schedule due to his first-time director status.”

Wan’s Willingness to Support Wilson as a Sounding Board

Meanwhile, Wan eagerly embraced the role of a sounding board for Wilson. Drawing from his own experiences directing the Insidious and Conjuring franchises, among others, Wan provided invaluable guidance to the actor-turned-director, engaging in discussions about his numerous ideas for the franchise. Wan himself had a similar experience during the early days of the Insidious series, where he and Whannell collaborated closely on the first three films. Whannell later made his directorial debut with Insidious: Chapter 3 after having served as a sounding board for Wan in the preceding movies, where Whannell had written the scripts. Wan aimed to foster a similar environment for Wilson and expressed:

“Yes, for me, it was primarily about being there for Patrick as a sounding board. He would reach out to me with ideas and thoughts at all hours of the day, and I would respond to him accordingly. I would provide feedback and suggest alternative approaches. We engaged in a continuous exchange of ideas. That’s the kind of collaboration I shared with Leigh, and I wanted to extend the same support to Patrick. Whether it involved the script, the storyline, demon design, or the intricacies of camerawork, I wanted him to feel comfortable approaching me for anything he needed.”

Insidious: The Red Door will take place a decade after audiences last encountered the Lambert family, with Dalton (Ty Simpkins) venturing off to college under the guidance of his father. However, their suppressed demons resurface, forcing them to confront the family’s hidden secrets and embark on another journey into the Further, seeking a definitive resolution. Rose Byrne reprises her role as Renai Lambert, alongside Andrew Astor and Lin Shaye.
