Olivia Colman and Dev Patel Star in a Bizarre Love Tale Titled ‘Wicker’

Wicker film

Olivia Colman is all set to lock horns, or rather hearts, with a wicker man in the upcoming off-kilter love story, Wicker. Dev Patel isn’t just playing any love interest; he’s playing an inanimate one made of wicker.

In this soon-to-be-shopped film by Black Bear at the imminent American Film Market, Colman portrays a lonely and, shall we say, less-than-fragrant fisherwoman living in a remote coastal hamlet. Exhausted from her hermit-like existence and the never-ending ridicule from her narrow-minded villagers, she decides to create her own spouse out of wicker, played by Patel. This unconventional love story quickly spirals into utter pandemonium among her parochial neighbors. Steering the cinematic ship are Alex Huston Fischer and Eleanor Wilson, the directing pair responsible for the quirky extraterrestrial comedy Save Yourselves! The duo also penned the screenplay, drawing inspiration from Ursula Wills-Jones’s short story, The Wicker Husband. Production and financing are in the able hands of Topic Studios and Tango, along with Colman, Ed Sinclair, Tom Carver of South of The River, David Michôd, Brad Zimmerman of Yoki, Inc., and Justin Lothrop and Brent Stiefel from Votiv. Though not currently a SAG-AFTRA endeavor, the film is set to begin shooting in Europe next year.

What’s Next for Olivia Colman and Dev Patel?

Colman and Patel are no strangers to a busy film slate. This year has been a whirlwind for Colman, who not only stepped into the shoes of Miss Havisham in Steven Knight’s take on Great Expectations but also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the miniseries Secret Invasion. While the show had its ups and downs, Colman’s performance was universally praised. Up next for her are roles in the musical prelude Wonka, sharing screen time with Timothée Chalamet, the dark comedy Wicked Little Letters, and Paddington’s next adventure in Paddington in Peru. On the other hand, Patel is riding high with his current role in Wes Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. He is also gearing up for Monkey Man, a movie that will mark his directorial debut, as well as the horror flick Rabbit Trap.

uh, a lonely, smelly fisherwoman? Only Olivia Colman could make that work. Plus, Dev Patel as inanimate? Should be good!
