Following his monumental success in the spy film “Pathaan” earlier this year, Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan is set to solidify his position as an action hero in the upcoming thriller “Jawan.” The enigmatic movie unveiled its first trailer today, showcasing SRK in multiple captivating roles and teasing a remarkable supporting cast. Described as a “high-octane action thriller that explores the emotional journey of a man determined to right the wrongs in society,” the film aims to combine the grandiose visuals of South Indian cinema with SRK’s signature charisma that has captivated Bollywood audiences for over three decades.

At first glance, “Jawan” appears to merge the bombastic style of South Indian films with the charm that has made SRK’s Bollywood blockbusters so beloved. However, the plot remains shrouded in mystery. The trailer opens with an ominous voiceover as SRK’s enigmatic character, speaking in Hindi, questions, “Who am I? What am I? I do not know… A promise made to a mother, or an unfinished purpose. Am I good or bad? A blessing or a curse? Ask yourself, because I am you, for better or worse.” The accompanying visuals suggest that Jawan, SRK’s character, was born in prison, served in the police and the army, and eventually took on the role of a rogue vigilante. Additionally, we catch glimpses of a chaotic mob donning masks similar to Jawan’s, hinting at possible inspiration drawn from Todd Phillips’ “Joker.”

In Hindi, “Jawan” refers to soldiers, and SRK dons at least three extravagant disguises throughout the film. The first appears to be inspired by the villainous Safin from the James Bond film “No Time to Die,” while the second resembles a mummy wielding a peculiar spear (or, to be more precise, Moon Knight). The third disguise may come as the most surprising of all, with SRK sporting a bald cap and a bearded face. Amidst these intriguing revelations, the trailer offers glimpses of the supporting cast, including Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, and Deepika Padukone in a “special appearance.” It also suggests that Jawan is embarking on a moralistic war alongside an army of female soldiers. Notably, the trailer is accompanied by an exhilarating original track composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

Is “Jawan” a Bollywood Movie?

Directed by Atlee, best known for his work in Tamil-language cinema, “Jawan” appears to be a fusion of cultures and aesthetics. India has several regional film industries that largely operate independently from one another. While SRK is a Bollywood star primarily working in the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai, Atlee’s expertise lies in the mainstream Tamil industry located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. For instance, last year’s blockbuster “RRR” was a Telugu-language film. “Jawan” can be classified as a “pan-Indian movie,” a term used for films designed to transcend state boundaries. Accordingly, “Jawan” is set to release in multiple languages across India simultaneously.

After a nearly five-year hiatus following the critical and commercial failure of his 2018 film “Zero,” SRK made a grand comeback this year with “Pathaan.” Although “Jawan” was recently postponed from its original June release date, it is now scheduled for September 7.
