The upcoming release of Barbie has captivated audiences worldwide, with Margot Robbie embodying the essence of the iconic blonde bombshell. The film, centered around the beloved Mattel toy, has been in development for several years, leaving room for speculation on who could have secured the coveted role of Barbie before Robbie. While Greta Gerwig was the production’s first choice for director, Robbie remained open-minded, knowing she might not be Gerwig’s initial pick for the role—and she was perfectly content with that prospect.
In a recent interview with FilmSweep’s Perri Nemiroff, Robbie shared her experience of joining the Barbie project as a producer, with no assurance of landing the acting role. She explained:
“I didn’t want to impose my presence on whoever our director would be—especially considering Greta was our first choice. I made it clear that I wouldn’t be offended if I wasn’t chosen for the role. We could explore any possibilities. I fully supported the director’s vision and their desired casting. As a producer, I had a stake in the project, but as an actor, I wanted the freedom of choice for the director.”
Robbie further expressed, “And Greta responded with, ‘Stop doubting yourself, I want to write this for you.’ I cautioned her about feeling pressured to say that… and we engaged in that back-and-forth for a while. Eventually, I accepted that she genuinely wanted me to portray the character. She wrote the script with me and Ryan [Gosling] in mind, and our names were already embedded in the fabric of the story: ‘Barbie – Margot,’ ‘Ken – Ryan Gosling.'” Audiences are equally fortunate that Gerwig recognized the remarkable compatibility of this dynamic duo for their respective roles as Barbie and Ken.
