‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ Exceeds Remarkable Global Box Office Benchmark

Columbia and Sony’s joint venture, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, continues its financial victory lap by surpassing the $600 million mark at the global box office, thanks to a $13.8 million boost this weekend. Already a record-breaker, the animated Spider-Man endeavor stands as Sony Pictures Animation’s top-earning film and continues to maintain solid week-to-week performance.

Having amassed a global box office total of $607.3 million according to recent projections, Across the Spider-Verse boasts robust domestic sales while also seeing considerable returns from international markets. The movie’s overseas takings total $267.4 million, with China being its most lucrative international market. This weekend, the film generated an additional $1 million in China, pushing its Chinese box office total to $48.6 million. The U.K., Mexico, Australia, and France follow in terms of profitability, with total revenues of $32.6 million, $27 million, $18.5 million, and $12.1 million respectively.

Despite being in theaters for over a month, the film’s performance remains robust, showing only a 35% drop from the previous weekend. Currently screening in over 11,900 theaters across 63 international markets, there are no signs of it slowing down in the near term. The competition is not particularly strong at present, with the recent release, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, debuting to a mediocre $60 million, falling short of most projections. Additionally, The Flash has been underperforming since its release. However, July is expected to see a surge of summer blockbusters, including Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1, Barbie, and Oppenheimer.

Praise Abounds for Across the Spider-Verse

Just like its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Across the Spider-Verse has garnered acclaim, being hailed as one of the finest animated films of all time and a beacon in the superhero genre. Ross Bonaime of FilmSweep remarked that the film is “not only one of the standout movies of 2023 and one of the most superior animated films in years, but it’s also contending for the title of best superhero film ever.” Directed by Joaquim dos Santos, Justin K. Thompson, and Kemp Powers, the film features Shameik Moore as Miles Morales/Spider-Man, who continues his multiverse adventure battling the interdimensional Spot, played by Jason Schwartzman. The ensemble cast also includes Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac among others.

The film’s lucrative performance at the box office has unsurprisingly paved the way for a sequel, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled to hit theaters on March 29, 2024. Originally envisioned as part of Across the Spider-Verse, it was later segmented into two separate projects. A Spider-Woman film led by female characters is also in the pipeline, though its release date remains unconfirmed.
