Garnering impressive box office receipts, the film has received accolades for its humor, heart, wit, and excellent animation. The secret behind its superior animation quality, according to director Jeff Rowe, is the rest and relaxation ensured for the animators by him and producer Seth Rogen.

Major motion pictures have been criticized, either by critics for subpar visual effects (case in point, Quantumania) or by animators themselves, for overworking. The latter issue was highlighted by animators working on Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, who expressed concerns over the untenable working conditions imposed to meet the film’s release deadline.

In an interview with Insider, Rowe emphasized that he, Rogen, and co-producer Evan Goldberg prioritized not overloading their team while working on the latest TMNT film. Rowe discovered during discussions with Rogen that their production company, Point Gray, highly values work-life balance. Rogen gave insight into their live-action projects, where the team sometimes worked on set for 40 straight days, a physically and mentally demanding process. To avoid such intense schedules taking over their employees’ lives, they ensured regular breaks from work.

Rowe said, “I took that philosophy very seriously and wanted to ensure that we made this film ethically,”. The Mutant Mayhem animation team was given the flexibility to work in a manner that best suited them, with some choosing to work “three days a week,” and others preferring to work from home in Scotland.

“Let’s Work It Out”

“We’d say, ‘Fantastic, let’s work it out, and let’s facilitate that because that’s your process and that’s what enables you to produce your best art,'” Rowe remarked. “And we would typically do that with most of the team, aiming to ensure everyone felt constantly supported.”

As the project lead, Rowe said that it was important that he bore more of the burden than his team, taking on their issues instead of passing them down.

“I don’t ever want the team to suffer more than I do,” Rowe said. “And ideally, I should be taking on more stress than the team because I’m the leader, and it’s my job to handle that, not theirs. It’s crucial to uphold this. People generally perform better when they are well-rested and maintain a balanced personal life.”
