Superman: Legacy

DC Studios has at last chosen its new Man of Steel, as David Corenswet is set to portray Clark Kent/Superman in the highly anticipated film Superman: Legacy, slated for release in 2025. Interestingly, a four-year-old interview with Corenswet suggests that playing Superman has always been a cherished aspiration for the actor.

In a 2019 interview with Entertainment Weekly about his Netflix series Hollywood, Corenswet acknowledged his physical resemblance to Henry Cavill, who previously portrayed Superman in the DC Extended Universe. He had been aware of this resemblance for some time. While expressing his desire to take on the iconic role of the Man of Steel, Corenswet also voiced his hope for a brighter and more optimistic interpretation of Superman, reminiscent of the comic book style, following Henry Cavill’s darker and grittier portrayal:

“One of my ultimate dreams is definitely to play Superman. I would love to witness a more upbeat and nostalgic rendition. I admire the dark and gritty approach by Henry Cavill, but I believe the next Superman should exude brightness and optimism.”

Corenswet Embodies the New Era of DC Studios

Directed and written by James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, Superman: Legacy is set to usher in the first chapter of the new DC Universe, titled “Gods and Monsters,” with Corenswet’s Superman leading the way. Considering this context, it is plausible that Corenswet’s vision of a more hopeful Superman may come to fruition. The film will feature a younger version of the character but will not retell his origin story, as clarified by Gunn. Peter Safran, Gunn’s partner at DC Studios, described the movie as one that delves into Superman’s balancing act between his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing. Superman embodies the values of truth, justice, and the American way.

While most of the other castings for the film are still undisclosed, it has been confirmed that Rachel Brosnahan will co-star as Clark Kent’s love interest and Daily Planet colleague, Lois Lane. This role adds another significant achievement to Brosnahan’s repertoire, following her success in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Unlike Brosnahan, Corenswet may not be a household name yet, which could help lend a sense of anonymity to his portrayal of Superman and allow the character to evolve.

Superman: Legacy is set to soar into theaters on July 11, 2025.
