‘Insidious: The Red Door’ Achieves Franchise’s Best Box Office Debut

Insidious: The Red Door

After a five-year hiatus since the fourth installment’s release in 2018, the Insidious franchise has made a triumphant return to the silver screen. The fifth entry, titled ‘Insidious: The Red Door,’ not only marks the directorial debut of Patrick Wilson, a veteran of the series, but it has also been captivating audiences and garnering remarkable box office success since its premiere on July 7. Following its ascent to the top of the domestic box office, surpassing ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,’ this horror saga has achieved its highest opening weekend in a decade, surpassing the performance of ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’ released in 2013.

Releasing the fifth installment in over 3,000 theaters domestically may have seemed like a risky move, but Sony has handled it astutely. ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ has already grossed over $64 million against its modest $16 million budget. Considering that this horror feature debuted between ‘Dial of Destiny’ and the upcoming ‘Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One,’ both of which reportedly had production costs around $600 million, ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ managed to dominate the domestic box office and claim the top spot. It earned an impressive $32.6 million in just three days. Furthermore, the Wilson-directed horror flick raked in $5 million from Thursday previews, exceeding the studio’s expectations.

While the previous installment performed well at the box office, the return to ‘The Further’ has generated mixed reviews, receiving a modest 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The original ‘Insidious’ film, directed by James Wan, may not have crossed the $100 million worldwide mark, but it remains the only film in the franchise to have a “fresh” rating, sitting at 66%. The subsequent movies in the series have received ratings in the 30s on the review aggregator. Despite criticism that the fifth entry deviates from the vibe of its predecessors, the franchise still maintains its popularity among fans, as evidenced by a 71% audience score for the latest film. Although ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ occasionally relies on “fan service,” the likable characters, including the return of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins, and a brief appearance by Lin Shaye at the end, compensate for any weaker aspects. Additionally, newcomer Sinclair Daniel captivated audiences with her scene-stealing performance as Chris Winslow. While surpassing the lifetime earnings of ‘The Last Key’ at $172 million may be a challenge, the strong start bodes well for the fifth film.

Is This the End of the Insidious Saga?

Although not its definitive conclusion, the tale of the Lambert family concludes with ‘Insidious: The Red Door.’ However, the Insidious Saga continues with Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani taking the lead in an upcoming spinoff film titled ‘Thread: An Insidious Tale.’ The movie was announced a month before the release of ‘Insidious 5,’ with Jeremy Slater (known for ‘The Exorcist’) directing under the banners of Screen Gems, Blumhouse, and Wan’s Atomic Monster production company. While specific details about the spinoff remain undisclosed, reports suggest that the plot will revolve around a husband and wife (Moore and Nanjiani) as they embark on a journey to prevent their daughter’s death using a mysterious spell. However, as is customary in the Insidious universe, such endeavors never come without dire consequences.

‘Insidious: The Red Door’ is now showing in theaters.
