The Saw saga continues. In September, the upcoming chapter of the longstanding Saw franchise, titled Saw X, will be presented by Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures. As the 10th installment in the series, it will delve into the earlier times of the story. Tobin Bell’s return had hinted at Saw X falling into the initial parts of the franchise, and now, the newly unveiled synopsis discloses the exact setting of the movie.

According to Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures, Saw X uncovers a hitherto untold segment of John Kramer’s (Bell) journey. Fighting terminal cancer, Kramer’s days of crafting twisted games are dwindling. His journey to Mexico, seeking a potential cure, leads him to become Jigsaw once again. The detailed synopsis states:

“John Kramer (Tobin Bell) returns, bringing to light Jigsaw’s final, undisclosed games. Taking place between Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John embarks on a journey to Mexico for a risky, experimental medical procedure, hoping for a miraculous cure for his cancer. He, however, stumbles upon a fraudulent scheme targeting the most vulnerable. The notorious serial killer reverts to his old ways, orchestrating a retribution against the fraudsters through his signature, chillingly imaginative traps.”

The Saw franchise was launched in 2004 with Cary Elwes and Leigh Whannell headlining a movie that would soon be a horror mainstay. Sequels ensued, highlighting Jigsaw’s gruesome and complex justice system, with each film focusing on his victims “repenting” for a certain moral crime. The franchise garnered notoriety for its intense gore and horrifying traps. After Saw: The Final Chapter (also known as Saw 3D), Jigsaw appeared in 2017, taking place a decade after Kramer’s demise. The 2021 episode, Spiral: From the Book of Saw, took a slightly different tack, spotlighting a killer who admired and imitated Kramer.

Tobin Bell Not the Sole ‘Saw’ Veteran for Saw X

Joining Bell’s comeback as the eponymous murderer, Shawnee Smith is also set to rejoin the franchise as Amanda Young. She, a Jigsaw victim, managed to evade the notorious reverse bear trap and gradually became somewhat of a protegé to Kramer. Kevin Greutert, who directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, and edited the initial five movies and Jigsaw, helmed Saw X. The script was penned by Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, the writers behind Spiral and Jigsaw. The cast also includes Renata Vaca, Michael Beach, Synnøve Macody Lund, Octavio Hinojosa, Paulette Hernandez, and Joshua Okamoto.

Saw X is set to premiere exclusively in theaters on September 29. Meanwhile, relive Bell’s inaugural portrayal of Jigsaw in the Saw trailer below:
